Early History

To study the Sable Frenchie's background, we must first look into the French Bulldog, which, not withstanding its name, started in the United Kingdom. The British Bulldog, the French Bulldog's predecessor, was originally bred for bull-baiting. When the brutal sport was declared illegal in 1835, humans started breeding smaller breeds of dogs.

Dogs with faults, such as being too little or having ears that stood on edge, were transferred to France. These dogs are thought to have been bred with local ratter dogs, and the resulting puppies are what we now call French bulldogs. Unfortunately, there are no records that show when Sable French Bulldogs was bred.

The popularity of the French Bulldog declined in the late 1800s as a result of its association with blood sports. However, they quickly regained popularity. The Sable Frenchie is a color variation of the popular French Bulldog that has a typical fawn until you take a closer look.

Traits of Sable French Bulldogs

  • The Distinct Color

In comparison, sable French bulldogs have a more complicated coat color pattern. Sable coloring is distinguished by a combination of dark-tipped hairs layered on an overall lighter hue. It produces the illusion of a coat with stronger shades or accents dispersed across the foundation color, resulting in a multi-tone effect.

This Frenchie coat has a "tipped" look, with black hair tips on every strand shaft progressively blending into the brown foundation color. It gives the coat a stunning, multifaceted aspect that catches the light.

The sable coat can come in a variety of tints and combinations, including black, brown, and additional colors. The prominent tipping or darkening ends of the hairs contribute to the sable structure, creating a visually distinctive look that distinguishes these French Bulldogs.

  • The Appearance:

Sable Frenchies are a more unusual variation of the fawn. They have a fawn coat with black tipping on the fawn hairs, resulting in a washed-out black appearance with a fawn background. The foundation colour of a Frenchie’s coat is usually a rich, warming brown tone that ranges in strength from mild to deep.

The faces and ears can appear darker than the rest of their bodies, with black or dark brown pigmentation surrounding the eyes and ears. It gives the dog a stunning and distinctive look. A combination of black and brown hairs in the coat can give a Sable French Bulldog a grizzled appearance, with darker and lighter hairs forming a lovely and distinct coat pattern.
